Lately, I’ve been completely drawn to the moody bedroom trend that’s taking over interior design in 2025. You’ve probably seen it too—deep, earthy wall colors, dramatic contrasts, and all the cozy textures that turn a bedroom into an escape. I’m officially leaning into it for our Chicago primary bedroom, and I’m already obsessed.

Why I’m Embracing a Moody Bedroom Aesthetic

Our bedroom is on the larger side, and while that’s a dream, I want it to feel a bit more intimate—like a warm hug at the end of a long day. Enter: brown walls and black interior doors. This cozy color palette adds depth, warmth, and a touch of drama without feeling too heavy.
Now, not everyone in the house is quite as convinced. My partner is very much Team Light Walls, but I’ve been campaigning hard for something with more mood. (Spoiler: I’ll probably win this one.) I even painted a few sample swatches on the wall and got the very on-brand response: “Are you telling me those are different colors?”

The Paint Colors I’m Loving
I’ve been testing out rich, earthy shades like Farrow & Ball’s Salon Drab and Behr’s Dark Truffle. Both are deep without feeling too dark, and they bring instant sophistication. Paired with a matte black interior door, the look is grounded, bold, and totally on trend.

Building the Mood: Color, Texture & Lighting
To keep things from feeling flat, I’m layering in lots of texture: velvet pillows, natural wood furniture, wool throws, and woven rugs. I’m also planning on soft, ambient lighting—warm bulbs in sconces and lamps that create that perfect end-of-day glow.
I’m looking to mix in a few new pieces with items we already own—some of our wood furniture will stay, and I’ll be pairing it with updated textiles and lighting to strike that perfect balance between fresh and familiar. The goal is a space that feels thoughtful and cozy, not like it was all ordered at once.
And because this space will be our retreat, I’m focusing on warm neutral tones, black-framed artwork, and a few vintage finds to give it that collected-over-time vibe. I want it to feel a little bit modern, a little bit vintage, and totally us.
A Peek at the Mood Board
To help bring the vision to life, I pulled together a mood board with some of my favorite elements: cozy bedding, rich paint colors, matte finishes, and pieces that lean into this earthy, intimate aesthetic. What do you think?!

This trend isn’t just about color—it’s about creating a space that feels lived-in, comforting, and a little bit dramatic in the best way. I can’t wait to share the next steps as this moody bedroom makeover unfolds!
